PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide excellent emulsion polymerization of at least one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers selected from acrylic acid monomers, styrene monomers, and diene monomers. Provided is a method for producing an emulsion polymer which can be performed with polymerization stability and has good mechanical stability. SOLUTION: An alkyl vinyl ether having an oxyalkylene group in a side chain is copolymerized in an amount of 0.1 mol% or more, A modified polyvinyl alcohol having a saponification degree of 10 mol% or more and a 4% aqueous solution viscosity at 20 ° C. of 1.5 mPa · s or more is prepared from an acrylic acid monomer, a styrene monomer, or a diene monomer. It is used as a protective colloid in the emulsion polymerization of at least one or more selected ethylenically unsaturated monomers. |
