abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a corresponding hydroxyphenylpropanol (II) from a hydroxyphenylpropionate (I) in good yield using sodium borohydride as a reducing agent. SOLUTION: Formula (I) in a solvent (Wherein R 1 and R 2 each independently represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 5 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkylcycloalkyl group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, A phenyl group which may be substituted by an aralkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms or an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and R 3 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms.) Formula (II) characterized in that sodium borohydride and calcium halide act on esters.
