abstract (57) [Problem] To provide a method for producing β-hydroxyaldehyde. SOLUTION: Phosphorus-oxygen-ligand or nitrogen-oxygen- The 1,2-oxirane is reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a transition metal compound that is modified with a ligand and acts as a catalyst. [Effect] β-hydroxyaldehyde is formed with high selectivity and high yield, the use of a promoter is unnecessary, and the required amount of catalyst is small.
