abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a symmetrical azaphthalide-based compound by a simple and inexpensive production method, and therefore suitable for production on an industrial scale and with high purity and high yield. SOLUTION: By reacting a heterocyclic dicarboxylic acid compound and an aniline compound in acetic anhydride in the presence or absence of a metal halide and acetic acid, the heterocyclic dicarboxylic acid compound is directly converted in one step.
