abstract (57) [Summary] [PROBLEMS] α, α, α ', α'-tetrahalogeno-o- Provided is a method capable of producing a corresponding aromatic-o-dialdehyde compound in high yield and at low cost by hydrolyzing a xylene compound. Further, the present invention provides a method capable of suppressing a side reaction and producing a target aromatic-o-dialdehyde compound with high purity without performing a special purification step. SOLUTION: α, α, represented by the general formula (1) A method for producing an aromatic-o-dialdehyde compound, comprising hydrolyzing an α ′, α′-tetrahalogeno-o-xylene compound in the presence of an excess amount of water. General formula (1) (Wherein, R 1 represents an alkyl group, a hydroxyl group, an alkoxy group, a nitro group, a cyano group, a halogen atom or a carboxyl group, n represents an integer of 0 to 4, and when n is 2 or more, R 1 may be the same or different. X represents a halogen atom. )
