abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a novel compound having a biphenyl skeleton in a molecule, particularly a liquid crystal material or a liquid crystal composition having a wide temperature range of SmCA * phase and SmCR * phase. Further, the present invention provides a liquid crystal element having a high response speed near room temperature and a large tilt angle. A biphenyl compound represented by the following formula is provided. R 1 -XA 1 -CH 2 O-A 2 -COO-C * H (CF 3 ) -R 2 wherein R 1 is an alkyl group which may have -O- or the like, and X is A 1 is a biphenyl group in which hydrogen on the aromatic ring may be substituted by fluorine, and A 2 is Hydrogen on the aromatic ring is a phenyl group which may be substituted by fluorine, and R 2 represents — (CH 2 ) a O (CH 2 ) b H (a = 1 to 4, b ≧ 1). Further, the present invention provides a liquid crystal material, a liquid crystal composition comprising the compound represented by the above formula, and a liquid crystal element using the same.
