titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF A USEFUL INTERMEDIATE IN THE SYNTHESIS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
abstract A process for preparing the dichloride of 5-amino-2,4,6- triiodoisophthalic acid by chlorinating 5-amino-2,4,6- triiodoisophthalic acid with thionyl chloride in the presence of a suitable solvent characterised in that the reaction is performed in the presence of catalytic quantities of a phosphonium salt of formula R1R2R3R4PX (I) in which R1, R2 and R3, which are the same or different, represent C1-C4 alkyl groups, phenyl or tolyl groups, R4 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1-C6 alkyl group and X represents halogen, mesylate or tosylate is described. The dichloride of 5-amino-2,4,6-triiodoisophthalic acid obtained according to the process according to the invention is useful as an intermediate in the synthesis of iodine-containing contrast media.
