abstract A process is described for the preparation of a bis-arene vanadium, [V (arene) 2], starting from vanadium oxychloride, metallic aluminum, aluminum trichloride and an arene, in which: - (a) are brought into contact , in a first reaction stage, vanadium oxychloride (VOCl3), active metallic aluminum and aluminum trichloride, with a molar ratio between aluminum trichloride and vanadium oxychloride equal to or greater than 2 and with a molar ratio between metallic aluminum and vanadium oxychloride equal to or greater than 2, in a liquid arene, to form the complex [V (arene) 2] + [AlCl4]; - (b) a liquid cyclic or alicyclic ether is added to the product of the reaction of step (a) to reduce [V (arenas) 2] + in [V (arenas) 2]; and - (c) vanadium bis-arene [V (arene) 2] is recovered from the product of the reaction of step (b). The vanadium arenes thus obtained are useful in the preparation of olefin polymerization catalysts.
