abstract A new strain of B. subtilis obtained by mutagenesis from the wild type strain lodged as ATCC 55033 and its use in the production of surfactin is described. The use of this stable mutant in this process makes it possible to obtain purified surfactin in higher yields than from the parent strain. The surfactin so produced comprises an amino acid portion formed by a heptapeptide ring linked to a mixture of β-saturated fatty acids whose carbon chains have a number of carbon atoms varying from 13 to 15 and a normal, iso and anti-iso structure. <IMAGE>
