titleOfInvention BETAIN COMPOUNDS USABLE IN APPLICATIONS THAT REQUIRE HIGH PERFORMANCE SURFACTANTS
abstract The cpds. have the formula (I) or (II) below: in which A is -O-, -OM or -O-Y-R+; B is -O- or -OM'; X is an anion; Z is 0-2 and is sufficient for electroneutrality; R is a group of formula R1-CO-N(R2)-(CH2)n-N(R3)(R4)- circled positive-; R1 is 5-22C alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, or hydroxyalkyl or up to 20C aryl or alkaryl; R2 is H or up to 6C alkyl, alkenyl or hydroxyalkyl or cycloalkyl, pref. 2-5C, or up to 10C polyoxyalkylene; R3, R4 are each up to 6C alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or carboxyalkyl or up to 10C polyoxyalkylene, or from an N contg. heterocycle with the N atom linked to Y other than by the N atom; n is 2-12; or R is a heterocyclic group of formula (III) above in which Z is N, S or O; o is 0-3, p is 1-3 and o+p is 3-4, R1 as above is linked to a C atom, R6 = 2-6C alkyl or hydroxyalkyl; Y is up to 12C alkylene opt. interrupted by up to 3 O atoms and opt. substd. by up to 10C lower alkyl, koxy, hydroxyalkyl, or hydroxy; M and M' are each (a) H, alkali or alkaline earth metal, mono- di- or tri-ethanolamine or (b) up to 6C alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, up to 10C polyhydroxyalkyl, glyceryl, up to 6C cycloalkyl, or up to 10C aryl or arylalkyl provided if one of M, M' is a radical (b), the other is one of (a). The cpds. are used as surfactants. They are highly effective, very stable, extremely tolerable for human tissue, and have a very low ocular irritation and toxicity by oral means which makes them very suitable for toilet prepns.
