abstract A 3,3-dimethyl-allyl halide is reacted with a n alkaline salt of a carboxylic acid in an aqueous solution and in the presence of a phase- transfer catalyst to yield a 3,3- dimethyl-allyl ester which is then hydrolysed by treatment with an aqueous solution of alkaline hydroxide, in the presence of a phase- transfer catalyst to yield 3,3-dimethyl- allyl alcohol.
