titleOfInvention SYNTHETIC THERMOSETTING ADDITION POLYMERS
abstract The parent patent described the prodn. of aq. latices by polymsg. in aq. emulsion >=1 alpha, beta-ethylenically unsatd. main monomer which is difficulty sol. in water, and >1 alpha, beta-ethylenically unsatd. monomer contg. a reactive gp., and in the presence of surface active agents, and/or suspending agents, and a modifying agent which is non-reactive or which contains >=1 complementary reactive gp. The polymn. is carried out in the presence of 1-5 wt. % (on monomers) of water soluble salts of vinyl sulphonates, allylsulphonates or sulphoesters of formula R-CO2-Q-SO3M (in which R = vinyl or alpha-substituted vinyl gp., Q = divalent hydrocarbon radical bound to two different C atoms, and M = cation chosen from Na, K, Li or (substituted) ammonium gp. of formula NR'4 where R' = H 1-4C alkyl or 1-3C alkanolamine gp., or two gps. R' and the N atom form a morpholine residue and the remaining gps. R' have the meaning given above) as stabilizer. Presence of polymerisable stabilizer salt allows very small amts. of surface active agents (e.g. is not > 0.2 wt. % on monomers) to be used to give stable latex polymers. The latices can be spray dried to give stable powder coating resins.
