titleOfInvention IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITE MATERIALS INCLUDING A RESIN MATRIX AND CARBON FIBERS
abstract C fibres with better adhesion to resin compsns. have a Young's modulus parallel to the fibre length of 8.4 x 105 kg/cm2, and carry a continuous surface coating, 20-200 angstroms thick, of amorphous C obtd. by depositing a heat-carbonisable organic precursor onto the C fibre and carbonising at 1200 degrees C. The coated C fibres have a much smaller bulk dia. than uncoated fibres, giving more rigid bundles. The rigidity can be regulated by controlling the amt. of C deposit. The bundles of C-coated fibres are more easily handled and less liable to form knots. The C fibres may be obtd. from polyacrylonitrile, rayon, pitch, phenolics, epoxies or vinylidene chloride resins. Pref. carbonisable precursors are polyvinylidene chloride, polyacrylonitrile, PVC, asphalt, hardened epoxy resins, petroleum pitch, phenolic resins, polyimide resins and polybenzimidazole resins, used in soln pref. in hexamethylphosphoramide, dimethyl formamide and methyl ethyl ketone. The concn. of precursor in the soln. is 0.5-50 (1-10) g/litre. Pyrolysis is pref. in an inert atmos., e.g. N2, contg. 900-2300 (1000) ppm O2. The pref. temp. is 900-1100 decrees C, and the residence time at max. temp. is about 15 mins.
