titleOfInvention VULCANISABLE POLYMER COMPOUNDS BASED ON DIENIC RUBBERS AND POLYMER EPDM WITH GRAFT
abstract 1452222 Modified EPD polymers MONTEDISON SpA 2 Jan 1974 [2 Jan 1973] 00126/74 Heading C3P Modified polymers comprise an ethylene/ higher α-olefin/polyene polymer having grafted thereon 0À1 to 10 parts by weight per 100 parts of polymer of a vulcanization accelerator which contains an S 1-6 linkage, SN linkage or -SH group. The α-olefin may contain 3 to 14 carbon atoms. The polyene may be a conjugated diene, e.g. isoprene, butadiene or chloroprene, or a non-conjugated polyene containing 5 to 25 carbon atoms. The accelerator may be a thiuram sulphide, sulphenamide, thiocarbamyl sulphenamide, xanthogen disulphide, a sulphide or mercapto azole compound, many suitable compounds being listed, and reaction with the polymer may be effected in the presence of U.V. light, a hydrocarbon hypohalite or an N- haloimide. The grafting may be effected in bulk, emulsion, suspension or solution. The modified polymers may be mixed with highly unsaturated diene rubbers, sulphur or a sulphur donor, optionally together with further accelerator, activators, fillers, extenders and stabilizers, and the polymer and rubber covulcanized. The rubber may be natural rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, or a butadiene/styrene, butadiene/acrylonitrile, isoprene/styrene, isoprene/acylonitrile or polychloroprene rubber. Examples describe the grafting of ethylene/ propylene/ethylidene norbornene copolymers with (I) 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dithiobismorpholine, (II) 4,4<SP>1</SP>- dithiobispiperidine and (IV and VI) 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and the grafting of (V) ethylene/ propylene/dicyclopentadiene and ethylene/propylene/hexadiene-1,4 copolymers with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole; and the mixing and covulcanizing of the products with natural rubber.
