abstract Empty beverage bottles (30) of the type having an elongate shape in transverse cross section are delivered along a conveyor (32) in an upright orientation and are first filled with beverage from a holding tank (16). The filled bottles (30) are clamped by clamping belts (50) during capping. A label is then applied to an elongate side wall (35) of the bottle (30). Side portions (61) of the label are applied to shorter side walls (37, 38) of the bottle (30) by wiper brushes (65, 66). The bottle (30) is then gripped between adjustable drive belts (68, 69) to arrange the bottle in a desired orientation. A number of the bottles (30) in the desired orientation are assembled along an extension leg (82) against a stop (81). A ram (83) is then operated to shift the assembled bottles (30) from the conveyor (32) to a packaging station (85). <Fig. 1)
