abstract | Polymers which are derivatives of a polyvinyl alcohol, having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 2,000, and containing from about 0.5 to about 90 percent, based on the number of hydroxyl groups in said polyvinyl alcohol, of units of the formula <CHEM> wherein R<1> and R<2> are independently alkylene, arylene, a divalent cycloaliphatic group, arylenealkylene, alkylenearylene or arylenealkylenearylene, n is 0 or 1, A<1> is oxygen or NR min , A is oxygen, NR sec or a bivalent ureido group, R<3> is hydrogen or methyl, R<4> is hydrogen, methyl or COOR<5>, where R<5> is hydrogen or lower alkyl, with the proviso that if R<3> is methyl, R<4> is hydrogen, R min and R sec are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl, these polymers being an addition reaction product of units of formula I with from 0 to about 80 units of a vinylic monomer per unit of formula I, and crosslinked hydrogel contact lenses made therefrom and their preparation.n[EP0216074A2] |
