abstract | Topical medicaments comprising 3-7 (pref. 5) wt.% salicyclic acid (I) and 3-20 (pref. 5) wt.% benzoylperoxide (II) in a carrier are new. The carrier is pref. an aq. gel. contg. \~5 wt.% of a thickener comprising a mixt. of 1-3 (esp. 2) wt.% colloidal Mg aluminosilicate and 1-3 (esp. 1.25) wt.% methylcellulose. Other thickeners are also claimed. Also claimed is the use of 3-7% (I) and 3-20% (II) in a process conforming to German Patent Laq, section 2b(2), pref. with (I) in the form of an alcoholic soln. and (II) in the form of an aq. gel. Combinations of (I) and (II) have higher anti-acne activity (higher comedolytic activity and higher activity against Propionibacterium acnes) than either component alone. The medicaments have good storage stability. |
