abstract | 1495457 Electrophoretic coating compositions INTERNATIONAL PAINT CO Ltd 5 March 1976 [6 March 1975] 9315/75 Headings C3P and C3R Electropaints comprise as binder an at least partially neutralized composition comprising (A) a polydiene reaction product which is (i) the reaction product of a polydiene resin with 4 to 30% of its weight of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, (ii) a reaction product (i) partially esterified with a C 1-4 alcohol or (iii) the reaction product of a polydiene resin with 4 to 30% of its weight of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydride in which the anhydride groups have been hydrolysed, converted to half ester with a C 1-4 alcohol or converted to a half amide with ammonia or a primary or secondary amine; (B) the reaction product of a polydiene resin with 4 to 30% of its weight of maleic or itaconic anhydride and (C) a heat-reactive phenol/ formaldehyde resin; the acid value of (A) and (B) being at least 30 mg. KOH/gm. Preferred polydiene resins are 1,2- and/or 1,4-polybutadienes of molecular weight 200 to 20,000. The compositions may also contain pigments; optionally maleinized vegetable oils, epoxy resins or styrene/allyl alcohol copolymers; or aminoplast or acrylic resins. Examples describe compositions comprising (A) methyl half ester of polybutadiene/maleic anhydride adduct or hydrolysed polybutadiene/maleic anhydride adduct, (B) polybutadiene/maleio anhydride adduct and (C) condensates of formaldehyde with phenol, allylphenol, poctyl phenol, t-butyl phenol or salicylic acid, optionally with titanium dioxide, talc, iron oxide pigment, china clay and maleinized linseed oil and dispersed in water with triethylamine. |
