titleOfInvention Interfitting parts coated with anaerobic compositions
abstract 1422439 Coated interfitting parts LOCTITE (IRELAND) LTD 23 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 54399/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] An interfitting part is provided on an engagement area thereof with a first coating of an anaerobic composition (i.e. a composition that cures in the absense of oxygen) comprising a polymerisable acrylate monomer and a peroxy polymerisation initiator therefor and then with a second coating of a cyanoacrylate polymer. The part may be of metal, glass or plastics and may be a threaded fastener, pipe or pipe fitting, or a rivet, flange or bondable substrate. The acrylate monomer may be of formula where R<SP>2</SP> is -H, halogen or C 1-4 alkyl, q is 1-4 and X is a C 2-30 organo group having a total bonding capacity of (q + 1), and the anaerobic composition may additionally comprise an amine and/or sulphimide as accelerator. The second coating may be a polymer of a cyanoacrylate of general formula where R is a C 1-16 alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, phenyl or heterocyclic radical. The polycyanoacrylate composition may also comprise an anionic and/or free radical polymerisation initiator, a plasticiser such as a sebacate, malonate, diaryl ether or polyurethane, and a thickener such as a polymethacrylate, polyalkylcyanoacrylate, cellulose ester or polyvinylmethyl ether. The first coating may be applied by spraying, brushing, dipping or extrusion and the second by spraying, vapour phase deposition or dipping. In the Examples, (1) a bolt is sprayed with methylcyanoacrylate which is allowed to harden, a composition comprising tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate and di-2-ethylhexoate, cumene hydroperoxide, a sulphimide, a toluidine, quinone, and also dipropoxy bisphenol A maleate as thickener, is applied and is then sprayed with further methylcyanoacrylate monomer which polymerises instantly to form a thin film over the anaerobic composition; (ii) an anaerobic composition comprising tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate, fumed silica, mica, cumene hydroperoxide, a sulphimide, a toluidine and quinone is thickened with dipropoxy bisphenol A maleate, applied in a film to a flat steel surface, the film sprayed with methyl 2-cyanoacrylate which hardens to a solid film and another steel surface brought into contact with the covered film to thereby exclude oxygen and harden the composition.n[GB1422439A]
