titleOfInvention | Aqueous emulsion |
abstract | 1387185 Aqueous cross-linkable dispersions of vinyl acetate terpolymers AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 23 May 1972 [2 June 1971] 24241/72 Headings C3P and C3R An aqueous emulsion for use as an adhesive comprises (a) a thermosettable terpolymer of of 5-20 wt. per cent polymerized N-methylol acrylamide, 1-3 wt. per cent polymerized acrylic acid and a balance consisting essentially of polymerized vinyl acetate, (b) 5-20 parts by wt. of resorcinol per 100 parts by wt. of the polymer and (c) formaldehyde, the mole ratio of formaldehyde to resorcinol being from 1 to 2, the resorcinol and formaldehyde being supplied to the emulsion either as unreacted resorcinol and paraformaldehyde or as a water soluble resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, the emulsion containing 40-60 wt. per cent of water and being substantially devoid of solid particles having a size larger than 150 mesh (U.S. Sieve Series). The emulsion preferably has a pH of 4-6 and a viscosity at 50 wt. per cent water content of 300-7000 cp. measured at 25‹ C. with a Brookfield viscometer using a No. 4 spindle at 6 r.p.m. The emulsion may be cured in situ between substrates using an acid curing catalyst such as chromium nitrate, aluminium chloride, phosphoric acid, chromic acid, oxalic acid and nitric acid, to form laminates. A cellulosic thickener may also be present in the emulsion. In examples 200, 179, 194À5 and 185 parts by weight of the polymer emulsion are mixed with 20 parts by wt. of a 75% solids resorcinolformaldehyde resin aqueous solution and small amounts of cellulosic additives or a polyoxyethylene polymer. A further example uses free resorcinol and paraformaldehyde.n[GB1387185A] |
