titleOfInvention Explosive compositions
abstract 1314285 Explosive compositions ICI AUSTRALIA Ltd 3 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 56205/71 Addition to 1156596 Heading C1D [Also in Division C3] A slurry or plastic explosive composition comprises an inorganic nitrate, chlorate, or perchlorate, water, a fuel, and water-insoluble vesiculated or retiporous polymeric particles. The composition may contain coarse, fine, or prilled ammonium nitrate, with or without sodium nitrate; the ammonium nitrate prills may be coated with china clay. The polymeric materials from which the added particles are made include polystyrene, styrene-unsaturated ester copolymer, polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyethers, epoxy- and epoxyamideresins, methyl methacrylate or cyclohexylmethacrylate-dimethylamino-ethyl methacrylate copolymer, vinylidene chloride-acrylonitrile copolymer, phenyl-formaldehyde resins, condensation products of urea, melamine, or amino-triazines with formaldehyde, cellulose nitrate or acetate butyrate, and chlorinated rubber. The gas present in the added particles may be oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, acetylene, or air. Fuels specified are TNT, RDX, HMX, tetryl, PETN, nitrocellulose, nitrostarch, urea, sugar, molasses, alcohols, glycols, glues, sulphur, aluminium, silicon, ferrosilicon, ferrophosphorus, magnesium, titanium, boron, charcoal, anthracite, gilsonite, asphalt, sawdust, flours, dextrins, and starches. Fine aluminium powder coated with stearic acid may be used. The compositions may also include guar gum as a thickener, zinc chromate as a cross-linking promoter, tartaric acid as a cross-linking retardant, ethylhexanol as an antifoaming agent, and alkylene oxide condensate as a surfactant. The sensitivity of the composition is retained during storage and pumping.n[GB1314285A]
