titleOfInvention | Grain-refining compounds and their use in metal cleaning liquids |
abstract | 1362031 Pre-treating with Ti phosphate DULUX AUSTRIALIA Ltd 10 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 52150/71 Heading C7U A metal-treating composition comprises a mixed orthophosphate of Ti and at least one divalent metal selected from Ba, Sr, and Ca, the number of equivalents of Ti not exceeding the number of equivalents of the divalent metal; the composition being readily dispersible in water to form a substantially non-flocculated dispersion. The composition is prepared by precipitating and dispersing Ti orthophosphate in a medium comprising water wherein is dispersed an orthophosphate of the divalent metal, the process composition being free of divalent anions and having a water content not exceeding 40 wt per cent. All phosphates are preferably formed in situ, e.g. a mono-, di-, or trisodium - or potassium - orthophosphate may have added to it a chloride or nitrate of Ba, Ca, or Sr, preferably at 60-65 C, to precipitate the phosphate, followed by addition of Ti chloride or KTi fluoride, e.g. at 80-85C and pH 6À7 to 7À2; alternatively all the ingredients may be mixed initially and the divalent metal- and Ti-phosphates precipitated sequentially by heating initially to 50-60C and then to 80-90C; up to 1À5% (NaPO 3 ) 6 may be added as dispersing agent. The composition is solidified by cooling, crushed to powder, and incorporated in a metal grain-refining liquid for use prior to phosphating, e.g. one comprising Na or K carbonate, bicarbonate or hydroxide and having pH>9, and optionally containing alkali metal pyrophosphate, tripolyphosphate, silicate and a surfactant; the solution may contain 0À0005% to 0À05% Ti. Steel may be pre-treated with the above solution and phosphated in a bath containing ZnO, H 3 PO 4 , NaClO 3 and NaNO 2 at pH 2À5-3À5 and 60C.n[GB1362031A] |
