titleOfInvention High-viscosity cyanoacrylate adhesive compositions and processes for their preparation
abstract 1356482 Cyanoacrylate adhesives INTERCONTINENTAL CHEMICAL CO Ltd 6 Jan 1972 [6 Jan 1971] 597/72 Heading C3P Polymerizable cyanoacrylate adhesive compositions having a viscosity of at least 500 cps. at 25 C. comprise at least one monomeric ester of 2-cyanoacrylic acid and a polyacrylate (including poly - α - substituted - acrylate) thickener having a reduced viscosity greater than 5 dl./g. (as measured in chloroform at 25 C.) and a content of free radical polymerization initiator of less than one percent by weight. Preferred cyanoacrylates have the formula wherein R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl (e.g. phenyl) or monovalent heterocyclic (e.g. furfuryl) radical having up to 16 carbon atoms. Polymethyl methacrylate and polyethyl methacrylate are specified thickeners. The required viscosity and reduced initiator content of the thickener is obtained by heating the thickener (preferably disolved in a solvent such as methylene chloride) until the required values are obtained; heating is suitably effected at 140-180 C. for from 30-180 minutes. The compositions also may contain an anionic polymerization inhibitor such as SO 2 , SO 3 , NO, HF, an organic sultone or an organic sulphonic acid, and also a quinone or phenolic polymerization inhibitor. A plasticizer may also be present, e.g. alkyl sebacates or malonates, diaryl ethers or polyurethanes.n[GB1356482A]
