1322370 Analgesic &c medicines DR KARL THOMAE GmbH 16 Nov 1970 [17 Nov 1969 29 Sept 1970 (4)] 54474/70 Heading A5B [Also in Division C2] Pharmaceutical compositions having antiphlogistic, analgesic and antitussive activity and an effect on the prolongation of bleeding time comprise, as active ingredient, a 4-[biphenylyl- (4)]-4-hydroxycrotonic acid of the general formula: wherein each of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 is a hydrogen atom or one or two of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 is/are selected from halogen atoms and C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 hydroxyalkyl, nitro, amino, acetylamino, cyano, carbethoxy, hydroxy, methoxy, methylthio, methylsulphinyl, methylsulphonyl and optionally methyl-substituted carbamoyl groups and the other(s) is/are a hydrogen atom or hydrogen atoms, or a physiologically compatible base addition salt thereof, in association with a pharmaceutical carrier or excipient and, optionally, a further physiologically active ingredient, e.g. p-ethoxy-acetanilide. They may be administered orally, rectally or parenterally as granules, tablets, coated tablets, capsules, syrups, emulsions, suspensions, drops, ampoules or suppositories.
