titleOfInvention Surface treatment of plastics
abstract 1305449 Coating CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd 31 July 1970 [11 Aug 1969] 37120/ 70 Heading B2E The surface properties of polymeric material are improved by applying to the surface a soluution of a polar polymer and a peroxide cross linking agent and evaporating the solvent from the solution, said solvent having a solvating action on the substrate which swells the surface, the temperature being maintained below the softening point of the polymeric material during the application and evaporation steps. The polymeric material may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polyisobutylene, polyhexene, or copolymers of butylene and isobutylene, butylene and styrene, ethylene and butylene, ethylene and propylene, styrene and ethylene or butylene and propylene. The polar polymer is defined as a copolymer of ethylene with an unsaturated faty acid, e.g. acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and/or an unsaturated ester of a fatty acid, e.g. vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate or ethyl acrylate. The solvent may be benzene, toluene, xylene, tetralin, hexane, octane, decane, trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chlorobenzene, tetrahydrofuran or nitromethane. The solution may also contain anti-static agents, ultra violet absorbents, cross-linking accelerators, elastomers and polyolefins. The coatings may be applied by spraying, dipping, or by rollers. The solvent may be evaporated by infra-red heaters or hot air. The heat sealability and the adhesion of inks is improved by the process. In the Examples polyethylene film is treated and coated with flexographic inks.n[GB1305449A]
