Novel compounds I in which each of R 2 , R 4 and R 5 is an optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical and their O- acyl derivatives are prepared by reduction of novel compounds II or their acyl derivatives, or by splitting off the group X in a compound III wherein X is an optionally substituted methylene group, followed where desired by acylation. Compounds II are prepared by treatment of compounds IV with a glycol splitting oxidizing agent.
