D-xylose is obtd. from dried lawn grasses having a high xylane content, mainly from reeds, by steaming, preliminary wetting and acid hydrolysis. The hydrolysis is carried out at 100-150 deg.C, pref. at 130-140 deg.C for not more than 30 minutes, pref. 15 minutes, while the low boiling components of the reaction mixt. are continuously removed by steam distillation. The mixt. is then cooled to below 60 deg.C, the digested material is extracted and D-xylose is sepd. from the aq. phase. |
