abstract The present invention relates to novel compounds belonging to the well-known family of erythromycin macrolide antibiotics, and more particularly to novel macrolide intermediates useful in the preparation of novel antibacterial macrolides, and to a process for their preparation. The compounds of formula (I) and their pharmaceutically acceptable addition salts with inorganic or organic acids, wherein R1 in the formula (I) is hydrogen; 1-4 carbon atoms; arylcarbonylpipes; and R1 and R2 together with the carbon radicals to which they are attached may form a cyclic carbonyl or thiocarbonyl tube moiety; R2 is hydrogen; or R2 and R1 together with the carbon radicals to which they are attached may form a cyclic carbonyl or thiocarbonyl tube moiety; R3 is hydrogen; 1-4 carbon atoms; or arylcarbonyl; Z is hydrogen; or (i) an L-cladinosyl moiety of the general formula, wherein R4 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-4 alkane moiety; W is a hydrogen atom or a D-desazaminyl moiety of formula (ii) wherein R5 is a hydrogen atom, or a 1-4 carbon alkane moiety, or an arylcarbonyl moiety; or a C 1-4 alkane moiety and Yhydroxy moiety. ŕ
