abstract According to the invention, new 5,11-dihydro-6H-dipyrido * and -thiones of the general formula are prepared in which, for example: Z is oxygen or sulfur; R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, fluoroalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, 2-halo-propen-1-yl, arylmethyl, R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, fluoroalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkylthioalkyl, alkanoyl, hydroxyalkyl, arylmethyl, R3 to R8 are each hydrogen or one of R3 to R8 is alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkoxycarbonyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkanyl or R3, R4 and R5 independently of one another hydrogen or alkyl, provided that at least one of them is hydrogen or one of R3, R4 and R5 is butyl, and R6, R7 and R8 independently of one another are hydrogen or alkyl under the condition that at least one of them is hydrogen or one of R6, R7 and R8 is butyl, while the other two substituents are hydrogen.
