abstract Protective coating compsns. comprise: (a) 10-30 wt.% alkyde type polyester contg. at least three alcoholic hydroxyles, modified to at least 25-40% with drying or semi-drying fatty-acids; (b) 1-10 wt.% adduct of pine resin and maleic-acid, or a cresol-formaldehyde resin esterified with glycerol and modified with pine resin; (c) 0.5-4.0 wt.% corrosion inhibitor. e.g. a rosin-acid- or a fatty-acid-salt of an aliphatic, aromatic or hydro-aromatic amine; (d) 0.5-5.0 wt.% emulsifier, e.g. esters or ester-salts of alkanol-amines with rosin-acids or fatty-acids; (e) 1-5 wt.% poly-olefine or ester polymer with a mol. wt. of 1000-50000, (f) alkali-metal salt, alkaline-earth-metal salt or zinc salt of a macro- or micro-crystalline oxidised paraffin having a mol. wt. of 250-700, or an alkali-metal, alkaline-earth-metal or zinc sulpho-soap; (g) 0.5-3.0 wt.% drying agent, e.g. salts of fatty-acids, naphthenic-acids or rosin-acids with variable valency metals; (h) 1-5 wt.% glycol-monoalkyl-ether, furfural, butanol, cyclohexanone, turpentine and/or a mixt. of these; and (i) 40-70 wt.% aliphatic, aromatic or aliphatic-aromatic solvent.
