abstract | The present invention relates to an asymmetric complex catalyst consisting of metal complexes and Lewis acids. The metal complex (1) is a compound of the general formula wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7 and R8 are the same or different and represent a hydrogen or halogen atom, an alkyl group or another group; One of R9 and R10 is hydrogen and the other is C1-4 alkyl; Q is a valence line or an alkylene group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; M is a metal ion; A is a balancing counterion or ligand. The present invention relates to processes for the preparation of complex catalysts and to the preparation of optically active alcohol derivatives by reacting a cyclic ether compound with a phenol derivative in the presence of these complex catalysts. The invention further relates to processes for the preparation of optically active nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds by reacting these alcohol derivatives with halogenated nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds in the presence of a base.
