According to the present invention there is provided a process for the preparation of acetylpyridines of formula (I) by reacting a pyridinecarboxylic acid ester of formula (II) wherein R 'is 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the presence of acetic acid in the presence of a gas phase catalyst. The active ingredient of the catalyst comprises titanium dioxide and at least one alkali or alkaline earth metal oxide and is applied to an aluminum oxide / silica substrate having an unacceptable density of at least 50%.
