The present invention relates to selective androgen receptor modulators which are antagonistic on tumor tissues containing androgen receptor, but ineffective or agonist on non-tumor tissues containing androgen receptor. The selective androgen receptor modulators of the invention are identified by in vitro methods using animal and human tumor cell lines in vitro or in human xenograft animal models. Apotentially selective androgen receptor modulator novel compounds are designed and synthesized using crystalline forms of their complexes with azandogenic and estrogen receptor ligands by X-ray diffraction studies. The present invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions containing the novel substances alone or in combination with other active substances, which can be treated with androgen receptor modulators for diseases and conditions such as benign prostatic disease, Alzheimer's disease, breast, brain, skin, ovary, liver, kidney. and pancreatic cancers, osteoporosis, male hormone replacement, male and female sexual dysfunction, hair loss, acne, seborrhea, androgenic baldness and so on.
