titleOfInvention A retinal device with a stimulating electrode unit and an earthing electrode unit, and a method for its use
abstract It is an object of the present invention to provide an artificial retinal device (10) for a particular type of retinal blindness which is implanted in the area under the retina and which is capable of inducing artificial vision by stimulating the remaining viable cells of the retina. The artificial retinal device (10) includes a stimulating electrode unit (12), preferably located in the retinal space, and an outlet protrusion (30a) having a grounding counter electrode unit (16) extending into the aqueous humor (54). The stimulating electrode unit (12) comprises a system of electrode units. Each electrode unit contains one or more microphotode diodes which can be connected in series, for example, to provide a higher voltage and current to the microelectrode. The stimulation electrode unit (12) and the ground counter electrode unit (16) are preferably located on opposite sides of the optic retinal membrane to allow efficient and high-resolution stimulation of optic retinal cells through the retina. wherein the method comprises the steps of: implanting the stimulating electrode unit on one side of the optic retinal membrane and implanting the grounding counter electrode unit on the opposite side of the optic retinal membrane.
