abstract An improved process for the preparation of compounds of formulas I and II, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein R1 is C1-C6 alkyl and R2 is - (CH2) mB wherein m is 0, 1, 2 or 3, and B is optionally substituted with one or more groups independently selected from chlorine, fluorine, bromine, iodine, (C 1 -C 6) -alkyl, (C 1 -C 6) -alkoxy, (C 1 -C 6) -alkoxy, (C 1 -C 6) -alkyl, phenyl or naphthyl substituted with trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethoxy and / or cyano. The preparation of compounds of formula (I) according to the invention involves reacting a compound of formula (III) with a compound of formula (IV) in the presence of water and a metal carbonate, and optionally salifying the resulting compound; and a process for the preparation of compounds of formula (II) by: (a) reacting a compound of formula (III) with a compound of formula (IV) in the presence of water and a metal carbonate; b) reacting the compound of formula I obtained in step a) with monohydrochloride or gaseous hydrochloric acid dissolved in an aqueous alkanol; and c) the hydrochloride salt of compound I in step b) in the presence of a base in a suitable solvent; R2 is as hereinbefore defined.
