Compounds of formula (II) are antibacterial agents wherein Q is -N (OH) CH (O =) or a -C (= O) NH (OH) group; R 1 is hydrogen, C 1-6 alkyl or C 1-6 alkyl substituted with one or more halogen, or when Q is not -N (OH) CH (O =), hydroxy, C 1-6 alkoxy, 1-6 alkyl; C 1-6 alkenyloxy, amino, C 1-6 alkylalkylamino or di (C 1-6 alkyl) amino; R 2 is a substituted or unsubstituted C 1-6 alkyl, cycloalkyl (C 1-6 alkyl) or aryl (C 1-6 alkyl) group, and A is a group of formula (IIA) or (IIB), wherein R4 is a side chain of a natural or unnatural alpha amino acid, and R5 and R6 taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a 5-7 membered saturated heterocyclic first ring moiety as defined herein.
