abstract The present invention relates to a process for the formation of a piperazine ring, and in particular to the preparation of heterocyclic compounds which can be used as intermediates for piperazinoazepines, e.g. for the synthesis of the antidepressant mirtazapine. The process according to the invention is directed to the preparation of compounds of general formula (I) in which R1 is optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, arylalkoxy, tosyl, formyl, benzoyl, acetyl or amino, R2 is optionally substituted alkyl, alkoxy. -aryl, aryloxy or arylalkoxy and R3 is optionally substituted alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy or arylalkoxy. In the process, a compound of formula (II) is reacted with a compound of formula H2N-R1. The invention also relates to novel compounds of formula (IV) and formula (XI). HE
