titleOfInvention Triblock copolymers containing middle block of styrene / isoolefin copolymer
abstract The present invention relates to a triblock copolymer comprising a middle block comprising a first copolymer of an isoolefin monomer and a first vinyl aromatic monomer and a homopolymer or two or more of a second vinyl aromatic monomer, vinyl aromatics, styrenes, methylstyrene, butylstyrene, halostyrene and p-allylstyrene. It contains end-blocks containing a second copolymer of a monomer selected from 3-butenyl) styrene. A further object of the present invention is to provide a process for the preparation of a triblock copolymer comprising: a) catalyzing a live polymerization of an isoolefin monomer (monomer A) and a first vinyl aromatic monomer (monomer B) by catalyzing a monomeric carbocationic polymerization condition; (b) allowing the polymerization to continue for a period of time T1 necessary to achieve a conversion of 20 to 80%, in which case additional monomers A and / or B may be added; (c) after the time T1 has elapsed, the polymerization is continued for only T2 for at least 95% conversion of the central block monomer with the addition of additional monomer A; d) after the T2 time, the apolymerization is continued by adding a second vinyl aromatic monomer (monomer C) for the T3 time required to achieve at least 95% conversion of the central block monomer; e) stopping apolymerization after T3; f) recovering the copolymer of pofiolefin; and the needle block copolymer obtained by the above process.
