The present invention is useful in the treatment of diabetes-related complications and aging-related disorders of the pyridinium compounds of formula (I): wherein R1 is -R4-R5 or -N (R7) N (R7) R9; R4 is -N (R7) R6O-, -N (R7) R6N (R7) -, -OR6O- or -OR6N (R7) -; R6 is alkyl; R5 is alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, -COR7, -SO2R7, -C (S) NHR7, -C (NH) NHR7, -COR10, -C (O) NHR7 or a group; R7 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, heteroaryl; R2 is fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodo, -OR7, nitro, alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, formyl, acyl, -C (O) NR7R10, -C (O) OR7, - NR7R10, -N = C (R7) (R10), -SR7, sulfamoyl, alkylsulfonyl and arylsulfonyl; and m is 0, 1 or 2; R 3 -R 7, -OR 7, -N (R 7) (R 10), -N = C (R 7) (R 10), -N (R 7) -N (R 7) (R 10), -N (R 7) N = C ( R7) (R10) and -CH (R7) C (O) R8; R8 is -R7, -OR7 or -NR7R10; R 9 is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, -C (O) R 10, -SO 2 R 10, -C (S) NHR 10, -C (NH) NH (R 10), -C (O) NHR 10; R 10 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, heteroaryl, and R 10 may be independently selected at each occurrence from R 7; and X is halide ion, acetate, perchlorate, sulfonate, oxalate, citrate, tosylate, maleate, mesylate, carbonate, sulfithion, hydrogen phosphate ion, phosphonate ion, phosphate ion, [tetrafluoroborate (III)] - (hexafluorate) V)] - ion, etc .; and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts and their preparation.
