The present invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of 4-aminomethylpyrrolidin-3-one, to new intermediates of the formula (6) and (7) and to the preparation of quinolone antibiotics. According to the process of the invention, Raney nickel catalyst and hydrogen are used to reduce the starting cyano ketone compound and the selectively reduced product is obtained in high purity and in good yield.
