abstract The present invention relates to bis-quaternary ammonium derivatives of general formulas (Ia), (Ib) and (Ic) acting as neuromuscular relaxants; wherein R 1 and R 1 'are di- or polysubstituted aralkyl or aralkenyl, provided that at least one substituent on each aralkyl or aralkenyl is alkoxy or acyloxy; R2 and R2 'are alkyl or alkenyl; A represents an unsubstituted or substituted carbonyl group 0, 1 or 2; m is 0, 1 or 2; p is 0, 1 or 2; R3 and R3 'are hydrogen, methyl or lower alkyl; R4 and R4' are hydrogen, methyl or lower alkyl; or R3 and R4 and R3 'and R4' taken together are of the formula - (CH2) g-, -CH = CH-, (CH2) hO- (CH2) k-, or - (CH2) hS- (CH2) k- R 1 and R 1 ', R 2 and R 2', R 3 and R 3 ', and R 4 and R 4' may be the same or different substituents and X is a pharmaceutically acceptable anion.
