The present invention relates to a compound of formula (I) - (V) which inhibits the release and / or synthesis of <-amyloid peptide, wherein R 1 is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, substituted alkyl, substituted alkenyl, substituted alkynyl, aryl, heteroaryl or heterocyclyl, R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, substituted alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, or heterocyclic, each of R3 is independently hydrogen and R3 and R3 are independently selected from the group consisting of: R4 may be taken together to form a 3- to 8-membered ring structure which may be optionally attached to an aryl or heteroaryl group, each R4 being independently hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, heteroaryl or heterocyclyl , substituted alkenyl or substituted alkynyl groups, each of R5 is hydrogen or a methyl group rt or R4 and R5 together form a C3-C6 cycloalkyl group, X is -C (O) Y or -C (S) Y, wherein Y is an organic group.
