The present invention relates to novel compounds of formula I wherein R1 is hydrogen; R2 is hydrogen, alkyl or acyl; Ar is -COR 3 or -SO 2 R 4 wherein R 3 is alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, heteroaryloxy, alkylamino, arylamino or heteroarylamino; and R4 is optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl; X is nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur or a substituent; W is hydrogen or alkyl, or an alkylene, arylene or heteroarylene bridge between two carbon atoms; or X and W together form a ring; Y is hydrogen, hydroxy or other substituents; and Z are hydrogen, spiro ring or oxo, and their optical isomers, diastereomers, enantiomers, pharmaceutically acceptable salts, or biologically hydrolysable amides, esters or imides thereof, and pharmaceutical compositions containing them. The compounds of formula I are useful in the treatment of diseases and disorders characterized by metalloprotease activity. SHE |
