abstract Olefins are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst constituted by (a) a metal, hydride or organo-metallic compound of metals of Group IV, V and VI of the Mendel<\>aeeff Periodic Table, (b) an inorganic compound of a polyvalent metal having at least three valencies, and (c) a halide of a Group III, IV or V element, and also in the presence of an ether which is added in the ratio of 0.1 to 5 gram molecule per gram atom of polyvalent metal. In the examples, ethylene is polymerized in the presence of both a catalyst of composition TiCl4/Sn(C4H9)4/AlCl3 (where C4H9 is n-butyl) and of dibutyl ether, tetrahydrofura or anisole.
