titleOfInvention Copolymers
abstract A copolymer is formed from a 1,5-diolefin of the formula <FORM:0998690/C3/1> or a 1,6-diolefin of the formula <FORM:0998690/C3/2> and an alpha olefin of the formula R6-CH=CH2 wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are each hydrogen, or a lower alkyl, cyclo-alkyl or phenyl group. Long lists of 1,5- and 1,6-dienes are included, those exemplified being hexadiene-1,5; 3,4 - diethyl hexadiene - 1,5; 3 - methyl hexadiene-1,5; 3,4-dimethyl hexadiene-1,5; heptadiene-1,6; 4-cyclohexyl heptadiene-1,6 and 4-phenyl heptadiene-1,6. Exemplified a -olefins are ethylene, propylene, butene-1 and hexene-1. The copolymerization may be effected in an organic solvent medium with a catalyst, that is preferably insoluble in the solvent, comprising a reducible polyvalent metal compound containing at least one metal selected from vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel and copper, and a mixture of aluminium compounds having the empirical formula R1aAlXb, wherein R1 is an alkyl radical of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, X is halogen, "a" is 2.5 to 0.5 and "b" is 0.5 to 2.5. Of the catalyst components listed, vanadyl chloride and aluminium methyl sesquibromide are exemplified. A number of solvents are listed of which heptane is exemplified. The copolymer is isolated and purified by precipitating with acidified ethanol and washing with ethanol. The copolymer may be made into a film.
