titleOfInvention Mono-esters of hydroxyalkyl sulphones and sulphoxides
abstract The invention comprises mono-esters of compounds of formula HOCH2CH2S(O)x-CH2CH2OH where #c is 1 or 2 and the ester group is a sulphate, phosphate or thiosulphate group or alkali metal salt thereof, or is derived from an organic carboxylic acid containing from 1-12 carbon atoms. The compounds are prepared by esterification under very mild conditions. In a typical esterification, the sulphato mono-ester is prepared using about 2 molar equivalents of conc. sulphuric acid. The alkali metal salts may be prepared directly by mixing the starting dihydroxy compound with a molecular equivalent of sodium or potassium bisulphate, heating, and removing the water of reaction, preferably with an azeotropic solvent. The mono-esters can be reacted with a compound having a functional group reactive to cellulose under textile curing conditions, e.g. an aminoplast textile resin, either prior to or subsequent to application to the cellulosic textile material to be treated. Specification 997,821 is referred to.
