titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to phosphate esters of 3-pentadecylphenol
abstract The invention comprises neutral organic amine and alkaline earth metal salts of phosphate esters of 3-pentadecylphenol, the phosphate esters being primarily mixtures of primary and secondary phosphates with a small amount of tertiary phosphate. They may be prepared by heating 3-pentadecylphenol with polyphosphoric acid for 5 hours, in the absence of a solvent, at 115 DEG C., and neutralizing to a pH of 7 to 7.7 with an alkali metal hydroxide or an organic amine such as cyclohexylamine, aromatic amines or alkyl or dialkyl amines. The mixture may be rendered anhydrous by heating under vacuum. The products are used as corrosion inhibitors. Comparative examples describe the preparation of the potassium salt of a phosphate of a pentadecylphenol-ethylene oxide condensate and the sodium salt of a phosphate of a nonylphenolethylene oxide condensate.ALSO:Lubricating and fuel compositions comprise as corrosion inhibitors neutral organic amine or alkaline earth metal salts of phosphate esters of 3-pentadecylphenol. The salts may be added to mineral lubricating oil, a high boiling hydrocarbon (initial b.pt., 375 DEG C.) or petroleum ether (b.pt., 90-100 DEG C.). From 0.5 to 2.0% by weight of salt may be added. Amine salts may be derived from cyclohexylamine, aromatic amines or mono- or di-alkylamines.ALSO:Neutral organic amine or alkaline earth metal salts of phosphate esters of 3-pentadecylphenol are used to inhibit corrosion of metals, specifically iron, steel and ferrous alloys, by, for example, water, brines, weak inorganic acids, organic acids, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. The inhibitor may be applied to the metal either by itself or in a carrier, but is preferably dissolved in the corrosive solution. From 0.5-2% by weight may be dissolved in water, methanol/water or petroleum derived hydrocarbons.
