titleOfInvention Esters of bis-ª‰-hydroxyethyl sulphone
abstract The invention comprises di-acid esters of bis-b -hydroxyethyl sulphone with monobasic aliphatic carboxylic acids. They may be prepared by reaction of the bis-b -hydroxyethyl sulphone with the acid, acid anhydride or acid chloride in any manner generally known for producing esters. The examples describe the production of the di-acetate and di-propionate esters by refluxing the sulphone with excess acid anhydride, distilling the reaction mixture and collecting the appropriate fraction. Specification 846,875 also is referred to.ALSO:Cellulosic and proteinaceous materials are treated by, for example, the method claimed in the parent Specification with diacid esters of bis-b -hydroxyethylsulphone with monobasic aliphatic carboxylic acids. In the examples cotton fabric is treated with an aqueous solution containing the acetate ester of bis-b -hydroxyethylsulphone and potassium bicarbonate (Ex1) and a solution containing the propionate ester of bis-b -hydroxyethylsulphone and potassium bicarbonate in a mixture of water and ethanol (Ex2) to improve crease and shrink resistance.
