Complexes are described between (A) an acid aryl phosphate, and (B) either an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol or an alcohol of the general formula <FORM:0995822/C2/1> where each R is alkyl and all the R's together contain 4-20 carbon atoms, R1 and R11 are the same or different alkylene groups, n is 1-4, and m is 0 or 1-8. Specific complexes mentioned are: (1) monocresyl phosphate and pentaerythritol; (2) dicresyl phosphate and pentaerythritol; (3) dicresyl phosphate and nonyl phenoxy ethanol; and (4) dicresyl phosphate and diisobutyl phenoxy (ethoxy)4 ethanol. Specifications 808,665 and 842,010 are referred to.ALSO:A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil and minor proportions of each of (A) an oil-soluble nitrogen-containing polymeric detergent and (B) an oil-soluble complex of an acid aryl phosphate with either an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol or an alcohol of the general formula <FORM:0995822/C4-C5/1> where each R is an alkyl radical and all the R's together contain 4-20 carbon atoms, R1 and R11 represent the same or different alkylene groups, n is 1-4, and m is 0 or 1-8. Additives (A) include copolymers of (1) methacrylates and/or acrylates with (2) substituted vinyl pyridines or pyrrolidones, or amino-alkyl acrylates or methacrylates, sometimes with (3) styrene, and also polyalkenyl succinimides and polyalkenyl polyamine derivatives of polyalkenyl succinic anhydrides, many examples of such additives being given. Typical examples of additive (B) are the complexes: (1) dicresyl phosphate and pentaerythritol, (2) monocresyl phosphate and pentaerythritol, (3) dicresyl phosphate and nonylphenoxy ethanol, (4) dicresyl phosphate and diisobutyl phenoxy (ethoxy), ethanol, and (5) dicresyl phosphate and a hydrolysed vinyl acetate/C16- 18 alpha-olefin copolymer. Optional additives mentioned include 2,6-ditert. butyl-4-methylphenol, 4,41-methylene bis(2,6-ditert. butyl phenol), phenyl-a -naphthylamine, dibenzyl disulphide, didodecyl sulphide, and phosphorus compounds such as full organic phosphites, phosphates, phosphonates and their thio-derivatives and salts of P2S5-terpene reaction products, examples of these phosphorus compounds being given. The hydrocarbon lubricating oil of the compositions may be blended with fatty oils or synthetic lubricants such as polymerized olefins, polymers of alkylene oxides and silicone polymers.
