titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to polymers
abstract A composition comprises a blend of (1) from 20 to 99% of a solid homopolymer or copolymer of a mono-alpha-olefin and (2) from 1 to 80% of a copolymer containing from 99.5 to 50% of interpolymerized ethylene and from 0.5 to 50% of an interpolymerized comonomer of formula <FORM:0995802/C3/1> <FORM:0995802/C3/2> <FORM:0995802/C3/3> <FORM:0995802/C3/4> <FORM:0995802/C3/5> <FORM:0995802/C3/6> or <FORM:0995802/C3/7> where each R is hydrogen or a C1- 4 alkyl, R1 is hydrogen or methyl, R2 is hydrogen or substituted or unsubstituted C1- 5 alkyl, R3 is an alkyl or aryl group of C1- 10, R4 is a hydrocarbon of C1- 14, X is hydrogen, an alkali metal or an epoxy alkyloxy group containing up to 10 carbon atoms and Y is hydrogen, an alkali metal or an ammonium ion. Illustrative of compounds (A) are N-vinylpyrrolidone, and the following substituted N-vinyl pyrrolidones, 3-(4- or 5-)methyl-, 3,4-(3,5- or 4,5-)dimethyl-, 3-(4- or 5-)ethyl, 3-(4- or 5-)propyl and 3-(4- or 5-)butyl indole (B) are N-vinyl succinimide and its 3-methyl or 3-ethyl or 3-propyl or 3-isopropyl or 3-butyl or 3,4-dimethyl substitutions; (C) gives acylamide, methacrylamide N - (N1, N11 - dimethylaminopropyl) acrylamide and sodium-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonate; (D) acrylic acid, glycidylacrylate, 2 - 3 - epoxybutyl acrylate, 1 - 2 - epoxyhexylacrylate, 1 - 2 - epoxydecylacrylate, methacrylic acid, and sodium potassium acrylates; (E) vinyl sulphonic acid and its potassium, lithium and sodium salts; (F) are vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, 2-ethylhexanoate, decanoate, benzoate, toluate and naphthoate; where (G) gives the following vinylphosphine oxides, dimethyl, diethyl, methylethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl, dipentyl, dioctyl, di-2-ethylhexyl, didecyl, diphenyl, ditolyl, dibenzyl and dinaphthyl Polypropylene is the preferred polymer of mono-alpha-olefin.ALSO:Fibres made from a composition comprising a blend of (1) from 20 to 99% of a solid homopolymer or copolymer of a mono-alpha-olefin and (2) from 1 to 80% of a copolymer containing from 99.-5 to 50% of interpolymerized ethylene and from 0.-5 to 50% of a comonomer (see Division C3) are dyed. The dyes may be acid, disperse, soluble vat, azoic and premetallized dyes. In a typical procedure with the acid dyes and premetallized dyes a 50 to 1 dye bath ratio is used, the bath containing 1% of a methyl polyethanol quaternary amine, 2% sulphuric acid and 3% of the dye. The dyeing is for 90 minutes at boil. When a disperse dye is used a typical bath contains 1% N-methyl-N-oleoyl taurate, 2% disperse dye, a dye bath ratio of 40 to 1 and a one hour boiling period.
